One of the major challenges in understanding high-temperature superconductivity in copper oxides, is to disentangle the rich variety of electronic phases that can co-exist, cooperate or compete with d-wave superconductivity. In this context, much theoretical and experimental efforts have been devoted to the pseudogap phase and associated charge density wave (CDW) ground state. However, the reported charge order lacks characteristic features associated with a CDW in scanning tunneling imaging and spectroscopy data. These observations question the existence of a CDW in several high-temperature superconductors, in contradiction with numerous recent publications.
