I will talk about types and properties of excitons in two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals magnetic insulators and semiconductors, such as CrI3, CrSBr, NiPS3, etc. In these materials excitons couple with the spin-polarized band structure, resulting in various correlated phenomena, such as formation of many-body excitons, exciton-photon and exciton-magnon coupling, ultra-narrow (sub-meV) excitonic emission. I will also discuss how probing excitons in 2D magnets helps studying magnetism in atomically thin materials, where “traditional” methods often struggle or fail.
